It’s not hard to make a small, simple native bee & pollinators hotel habitat!

When to make a native bee hotel?

Spring and summer is a great time for flowers and insects, as they converge on the garden to make a spectacular show.
Native pollinators such as bees and wasps are vital to the survival of our local species and to the function of our ecosystems
The habitats of these insects are slowly being eroded by urbanisation
Introducing insect habitat to your garden is simple and easy.
Many species of insect pollinators use holes as a nest for their offspring.

How to make your DIY Bee Hotel

  • Source some dried out bamboo canes and cut them to around 10cm pieces.
In most councils bamboo is a weed.
  • If you cant find bamboo, you can drill into old wood or recycled timber.
  • Tie the canes together into a bundle.
I place the smaller canes into a larger piece of  bamboo.
  • Hang the hotel in a sunny sheltered position off the ground at least 1.5m- on a shed or a fence is recommended.
  • If you have the time make a shelter for your bee hotel to keep the rain out.
The shelter can have a few different homes, such as mud filled bamboo or timber with holes drilled into them
